Quote of the Week
Arjuna said:  How shall I fight Bhishma and Drona with arrows on the battlefield, O Madhusudana?  Worthy of reverence are they, O slayer of enemies!
Bhagavad-Gita 2.4

Commentary:  Bhishma is the statesman and military commander of the Kuru kingdom; renowned for his wisdom, valor, skill in battle, and unwavering adherence to principles; his name means one who makes severe vows.  Bhishma is the eldest and most experienced of all the assembled warriors; he is the stepbrother of Dhritarashtra and Pandu's grandfather and saw to the education of both the Pandavas and the Kuruvas.  Drona was the most famous and skilled in military science and was hired by Bhishma to teach the Pandavas and the Kuruvas the art of war.  Bishma and Drona are therefore very close and dear to Arjuna, and are worthy of his reverence, yet he finds himself in this situation, having to fight against them.  This is Arjuna's dilemma, the perennial battle between the heart and the mind, between love and duty.  It is enough to tear ones world apart, and for Arjuna it has left him in a state of suspension, where he can follow neither the dictates of his heart nor of his mind.  Arjuna addresses Krishna as Mashusudana, slayer of the demon Madhu, and all enemies.  The rest of the second chapter of the Gita is Krishna's answer to Arjuna's suspension; it is the key that allows him to find the point of balance and integration between heart and mind, the key that allows him to respond appropriately and harmoniously to every circumstance while maintaining his inner state of peace.
