Quote of the Week
Arjuna said: It is surely better for us to live even on alms in this world than
to slay these noble-minded masters, for though they are desirous of gain, having killed
them I should enjoy only blood-stained pleasures in this world.
Bhagavad-Gita 2.4
Commentary: Arjuna believes that it would be better to live the life of a beggar in this world than to slay his grandsire Bishma and beloved teacher Drona both for whom he has great reverence. He is saying that it would not be a problem for him to kill demons as Krishna Himself did, but he cannot do this terrible deed to the people he loves, even though they are fighting on the opposing side for the sake of prince Duryodhana's desire for kingdom and riches. Arjuna is not afraid of the battel, indeed this verse also shows the great courage and confidence he has in his skills; he feels righteous and invincible, especially since Lord Krishna is on his side. Perhaps he is even a bit overconfident that he could kill not just one, but two of the greatest warriors of his time. Yet his hesitancy comes not from fear, but from the consideration that this act will place him on the wrong side of morality and goodness; this is the high level of his character.
