Quote of the Week

"As a man casting off worn out garments takes others that are new, so the Dweller within the body casting off worn out bodies takes others that are new."

Bhagavad-Gita 2.22

Commentary:   The Dweller within the body is our eternal invulnerable Spirit, i.e., our true identity, our true Self.  This Self is unaffected, and unchanged by any of the apparent changes we experience in our relative physical lives.  This Self is having this physical experience as our individual self or ego because It wants to know experientially every aspect of Itself from every perspective.  Just as our eyes can see everything, but itself, Spirit can know everything but Itself.  To remedy this situation the eyes need the help of a mirror to reflect itself from every angle, and likewise the Self needs the help of an apparent outside agent that can provide a complete reflection of Itself from every perspective.  We and all of creation provide that service to the Self; all our individual perspectives and experiences provide the details, which collectively, and all at once, form the wholistic reflection the Self needs to complete its knowledge and experience of Itself.  This is our divine purpose, as expressed in the ancient saying of the Oracle of Delphi:  Know thy Self!  Different garments allow us to experience and express different aspects of our ego-self, and likewise different bodies allows the Self to know and experience different aspects of Itself.
