Quote of the Week
"He who understands Him to be the slayer and he who takes Him to be the slain both fail to perceive the truth, He neither slays nor is slain!"
Bhagavad-Gita 2.19
Commentary: In this verse, our real nature, our true identity, our Higher Self, or divine lineage, is being contrasted to our apparent physical experience as bodies that can be hurt or slain. Our apparent but unreal, mentally fabricated, egoic self identity, i.e., our ego-mind-body complex, is what seems to slay and be slain. Krishna is making the case that the truth about our real identity abides in His unchanging Nature; He wants us to understand that our true identity as spirits is what makes us immortal and therefore indestructible, and furthermore insuperable. Not only are we not weak, frail, or vulnerable, we are eternal imperishable, and infinite! And because these qualities and characteristics extend not only to some of us but to every single aspect of God's creation, it means that we are all One-and-the-same Unified Identity. We are unified in our essential nature even though our surface level appearance or form appears different, like pieces of gold molded into various golden ornaments: rings, bracelets, chains, etc; one real unchanging thing appearing in various temporary, superficial forms.
