Quote of the Week
"Know That to be indeed indestructible by which all this (creation) is pervaded. None can work the destruction of That immutable Being."
Bhagavad-Gita 2.17
Commentary: Lord Krishna, having expressed in the previous verse the fundamental difference between the real (that which is eternal and unchanging), and the unreal (that which is temporal and ever changing), beginning here and in the next eight verses He further characterizes the nature of this real reality. In this verse the real is characterized as "That" (i.e., the unnamed thing, the indestructible Source pervading all of creation). Its indestructability arises from Its pervasiveness, which allows It to give expression to all of creation even while remaining transcendental to everything in creation. There is nothing more subtle than That, therefore there is nothing in creation that could destroy That. Its essential nature is immutable, i.e., unchangeable, insuperable, incapable of being diminished or augmented in the slightest, in a word, immortal! Now, the question arises: "How could something that is unchanging give rise to or create an everchanging creation; isn't 'creating' an action which implies change?" The short answer is given in the first phrase of the previous verse: "The unreal has no being" (therefore it does not exist,) and in the last line of the Row, Row, Row Your Boat nursery rhyme: "Life is but a dream" (therefore relative life is but an altered state of consciousness.) We will explore the longer answer to this question in the next few verses.
