Quote of the Week
The Blessed Lord said: Whence has this blemish, alien to honorable men, causing disgrace and opposed to heaven, come upon you, Arjuna, at this untimely hour?
Bhagavad Gita 2.2
Commentary: Krishna's response to Arjuna dropping his bow and sitting on the seat of the chariot, is both surprising and quite caustic, but it is done because Krishna want's to shake Arjuna out of his current state of suspension and back to his true status as the honorable, and righteous warrior that he is. This sharp but deliberate response causes Arjuna to pay attention and to question his decision not to fight. Krishna describes Arjunas state as a blemish, and for someone of Arjuna's status it is startling because of his stella reputation of unmatched conquests in contests as well as in actual battle; he is unafraid of any enemy as demonstrated by his extreme confidence when in the first chapter he said to Krishna "Draw up my chariot between the two armies, O Achyuta (Krishna), so that I may observe those who stand here eager for battle and know with whom I should fight in this toil of war." Brave words indeed; so it is quite startling for him to hear that he has a blemish that is not only causing disgrace but is opposed to heaven on his record. Krishna's meaning is clear, this is not an appropriate time for Arjuna to be in this state as missiles are about to fly; it is untimely indeed, but Krishna has more to say about Arjuna's state and what to do about it in the next verse.
