Quote of the Week
Sanjaya said: To him thus overcome by compassion, full of sorrow, his eyes distressed and filled with tears, Madhusudana (Lord Krishna) spoke these words:
Bhagavad Gita 2.1
Commentary: Sanjaya, the narrator of the Bhagavad-Gita, describes Arjuna’s mental and physical states here in the opening verse of the second chapter as: overcome by compassion, full of sorrow, his eyes are distressed and filled with tears. This is not the desired state of being for a warrior who is about to enter into battle, and certainly not for a warrior of Arjuna’s status and experience. The first chapter has elucidated that extreme grief born of the conflict between the dictates of his mind (duty) and his heart (familial love) as the reason for his present state, and Arjuna has exhausted his intellect in trying to find a way to satisfy both these dictates, so much so that he seeks help from Lord Krishna as the only possible solution. Arjuna addresses Lord Krishna as Madhusudana (slayer of the demon pair Madhu and Kaitabha,) in His other expression as Lord Vishnu, indicating that Krishna is capable of resolving all problems, as He himself states near the end of the Gita (18.66) "Abandon all varieties of knowledge and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not worry."
