Commentary: To "...raise his self by his Self..." means to let our Higher Self decide and guide our actions in every instant. The Higher Self is well equipped to do this because It: knows what is real and what is illusion; remembers our purpose for coming into physical reality; and knows the best way to fulfill that purpose. In contrast, our ego-self knows only what it perceives in the physical world through the senses of perception, and is therefore limited in what it knows about the world or about our purpose here. If we understand the different roles of the self and the Self, we would gladly follow the lead of our Higher Self and be a friend to our self. But if we do not understand, we will debase the wisdom of the Higher Self, and be and make it our enemy to our own detriment.
