Quote of the Week
My nature smitten with a taint of weakness, confused in mind about dharma, I pray Thee, tell me decisively what is good for me.  I am Thy disciple; teach me for I have taken refuge in Thee.
Bhagavad Gita 2.7

Commentary:  Arjuna's present state of being is one of deep confusion because he cannot find a solution that would allow him to do his duty as a warrior and simultaneously not bring harm to his loved ones in the opposing army.  He is unable to simultaneously satisfy the dictates of his heart, and his mind.  This confusion invokes in him an extreme sense of weakness to the very core of his being; he wants to do what is good and right but his heart and mind are telling him to do diametrically opposing things so he finds himself in a state of suspension, unable to act.  In this extreme state of helplessness he cowers, and turns to his friend Lord Krishna for help in the desperate hope that if Krishna can see a satisfactory solution, he prays that Krishna would tell him what to do.  Arjuna is willing to do whatever may be necessary even to the point of becoming Krishna's disciple.  Arjuna knows Krishna only as his dear friend, not as the Lord of Creation, but he seeks refuge in Him nonetheless, for his present state of weakness demands that he find help, so he naturally turns to his dear and trusted friend who is there with him for salvation.

January 4th 2026

Quote of the Week
We do not know which is better for us:  that we should conquer them or they should conquer us.  The sons of Dhritarasthra stand face to face with us, if we kill them we should not wish to live.
Bhagavad Gita 2.6

Commentary:  Arjuna's high moral values have left him in a dilemma; he does not know if it's better to kill and conquer his relatives and those in the opposing army, or to be conquered by them.  He is a warrior and is duty bound to conquer the opposing army, but he cannot reconcile this with the love he has for these his relatives, revered elders, and friends who are part of that opposing army.  He is certain at least that killing them would not be good for himself (or Krishna).  Arjuna is speaking here to Krishna and by using the plural (we) he is quietly stating that Krishna must certainly agree with his perspective; if his logic is flawed he hopes that Krishna will point this out to him.  This quiet plea is plainly expressed in the next verse where Arjuna having exhausted the limits of his own wisdom, naturally acquiesces to Krishna's. Up to this point in the story Arjuna knows Krishna only as a wise and trusted friend and a powerful warrior but not as the Lord of all Creation, which he will come to realize later.  Dhritarashtra is the blind king of the Kuru empire, and Arjuna is implying that Dhritarashtra's lack of vision is a subtle cause of the impending war, even though Duryodhana, the eldest of Dhritarashtra's hundred sons, is the main instigator of this conflict with the five Pandavas (Arjuna and his brothers).

December 28th 2025

Quote of the Week
Arjuna said:  It is surely better for us to live even on alms in this world than to slay these noble-minded masters, for though they are desirous of gain, having killed them I should enjoy only blood-stained pleasures in this world.
Bhagavad-Gita 2.4

Commentary:  Arjuna believes that it would be better to live the life of a beggar in this world than to slay his grandsire Bishma and beloved teacher Drona both for whom he has great reverence.  He is saying that it would not be a problem for him to kill demons as Krishna Himself did, but he cannot do this terrible deed to the people he loves, even though they are fighting on the opposing side for the sake of prince Duryodhana's desire for kingdom and riches.  Arjuna is not afraid of the battel, indeed this verse also shows the great courage and confidence he has in his skills; he feels righteous and invincible, especially since Lord Krishna is on his side.  Perhaps he is even a bit overconfident that he could kill not just one, but two of the greatest warriors of his time.  Yet his hesitancy comes not from fear, but from the consideration that this act will place him on the wrong side of morality and goodness; this is the high level of his character.
