Quote of the Week

"The blessed lord said: Both renunciation and the Yoga of action lead to the supreme good. But of the two, the Yoga of action is superior to the renunciation of action."

Bhagavad-Gita 5.2

Commentary: All paths lead to God, period, yet because all paths require action, the path called "Yoga of action" is superior to the path called "Renunciation of Action". The yoga of action means taking action to attain union (yoga) with God, or acting in union with God. The Renunciation of action, on the other hand, is the understanding that union is already inherent (for God is one) thus no further action is needed, one has simply to realize what already is. Quote of the Week

"He whose self is untouched by external contacts knows that happiness which is in the Self. His self joined in Union with Brahman, he enjoys eternal happiness."

Bhagavad-Gita 5.21

Commentary: Note the capitalization and non-capitalization of the word self. When capitalized it refers to our Soul, Higher Self or Higher Mind. When not capitalized it refers to our individualized body-conscious ego-self, the self we usually think we are. As we grow in the awareness that our self is just the facade we use to function in this physical environment, we become less and less attached to and affected (untouched) by external contacts, i.e. the interactions of this apparent physical world that impinge upon our self- consciousness. These contacts are the source of all our apparent problems and our little shadows of happiness. Our true divine happiness then, depends solely on our association and identification with our Self, as opposed to our self. And as we become more and more aware of our innate union with Brahman (God) our happiness grows in the direction of eternity.

Quote of the Week

"One who acts giving over all actions to the Universal Being is untouched by sin as a lotus leaf is untouched by water. By means of the body, by the mind, by the intellect, and even by the senses alone, yogis abandoning attachment, perform action for self purification."

Bhagavad-Gita 5.10-11

Commentary: The suggested technique for enlightenment is to give authorship of all actions to the Universal Being, the source, course and goal of everything in creation, so that we may remain untouched by the binding influence of action, which leaves one with a particular perspective regarding any action--either attraction, aversion, or indifference. This technique is something we practice with our body, mind, intellect and even with our senses, but it is based mainly in the understanding that nothing happens by mistake; all of life is a synchronous orchestration in which everything affects every other thing! This alone gives meaning to the adage to Do unto others as we would have done unto us, for in truth this is how it is! Knowing this purifies our thoughts, speech, actions, and our perceptions which in time, automatically leads to enlightenment.

Anthony Paul Moo-Young, known as Mooji, was born on 29 January 1954 in Port Antonio, Jamaica. Mooji is a direct disciple of Sri Harilal Poonja, the renowned Advaita master, or Papaji. Since 1999, Mooji has been sharing Satsang in the form of spontaneous encounters, retreats, Satsang intensives and one-to-one meetings with the many seekers who visit him, from all parts of the world, in search of the direct experience of truth. Few amongst the modern teachers of the Advaita tradition expound the 'knowledge of Self', and the method of self-inquiry, with such dazzling clarity, love, and authority. His style is direct, clear, compassionate and often humorous.
