Quote of the Week
Sanjaya said: Gudakesha, oppressor of the foe, having spoken thus to Hrishikesha, said to Govinda (Lord Krishna): 'I will not fight' and fell silent.
Bhagavad-Gita 2.9
Commentary: Arjuna, for most of the first chapter and the previous verses of this chapter, has been analyzing and expressing his dilemma to Lord Krishna, who has been quietly and attentively listening. Having failed to arrive at a viable solution that would satisfy both his mind and heart (his duty as a warrior, and his love for family and friends) Arjuna acquiesces, defending neither his kingdom nor his loved ones, and instead accepting his own defeat and certain death with no resistance, and only a faint hope that Lord Krishna may offer a better solution. The teaching here to all who would offer advice to one in need is to: first listen attentively so you can understand and identify the source of the problem, then, when the one in need of advice comes to his wit's end, so to speak, and falls silent, ready willing and able to receive a different perspective, you can easily, happily and succinctly offer your advice. It is our objectivity that allow us to perceive and offer perspectives that the one in need cannot yet see, and it is our great joy to shear this objectivity. Just as a mother happily offers her loving advice to her son who comes to her with a bruised knee or some other trivial problem, so Sanjaya describes Lord Krishna's mood as "smilingly" in the next verse as he happily begins to offer Arjuna the perennial wisdom of life.
